Two extraordinary American quilt traditions stand side by side in this year's exhibit at The People's Place Quilt Museum in Intercourse, Pennsylvania. The exhibition of 28 antique quilts opened April 1 and is on display through October 31, 2002.
The "plain" quilts come from Amish makers. Their bold colors, strong geometric lines, their crisp angles and points, have unmistakable strength. The Applique quilts are the "fancy" ones, bursting with feathers and
florals, vines, urns, and arcs.
The patterns and designs of these two traditions seem to stand in
utter contrast to each other. On a second glance, similarities begin to
emerge: Amish quilts and Applique quilts are both highly quilted. In both
traditions, plain fabrics were used. Borders were given primary attention by both Amish and Applique quiltmakers.
"These gloriously artistic quilts highlight each other's particularities," commented curator Phyllis Pellman Good. "By seeing their striking differences, you are able to experience the magnificence of each style more fully.
"This lovely exhibit shows the many ways in which a quilt can be dramatic. It pays tribute to the many subtleties of piecing and the powerful place of design and color."
Among the Applique quilts is a Baltimore Album, dated 1843, and composed of 25 album blocks. In addition there is a Coxcomb Applique, a Rose of Sharon, a Harrison Rose, and a Pots of Flowers.
Cherished Amish patterns among the quilts in the exhibit include a
Center Diamond, a Tumbling Blocks, a Crown of Thorns, Ocean Waves, and several Nine-Patch Variations.
The show of 28 antique quilts hangs in the highly acclaimed People's
Place Quilt Museum on Route 340 in the village of Intercourse (Lancaster County), Pennsylvania. Located on the second floor of the historic Old Country Store, the Museum is open from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
"Plain and Fancy—Antique Amish Quilts and Antique Applique Quilts" is on exhibit now through October 31, 2002. Call 800/828-8218 for additional information. Group rates are available upon request. Or check the website at www.ppquiltmuseum.com
